Day-by-day itinerary

What the operator has planned, day by day.

1. Day 1

   Arrival in Nairobi and transfer to Amboseli

   Met at the airport and driven 240km south to Amboseli, about four to five hours, with a stop at the Namanga border town. An afternoon game drive follows arrival, in a park the operator describes as sitting within a far larger ecosystem spanning the Kenya-Tanzania border.

2. Day 2

   Full day in Amboseli National Park

   A full day in the park, which the operator puts at over 50 mammal species and more than 400 birds, fed by underground water off Kilimanjaro. The afternoon covers a Maasai village visit and a guided walk with Maasai warriors on medicinal plants and how people and wildlife share this semi-arid country.

3. Day 3

   Amboseli to Lake Nakuru National Park

   A long transfer of around 395km, seven to eight hours, passing back through Nairobi. It breaks at Lake Naivasha for a boat trip out among the hippos and birds before continuing to Lake Nakuru for an evening game drive.

4. Day 4

   Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara

   An early game drive at Nakuru, then the 300km drive west to the Masai Mara through the Rift Valley, with a stop at a Maasai market. Arrive for an evening game drive in the reserve.

5. Day 5

   Full day in the Masai Mara

   A full day across the reserve. The afternoon takes in the Mara Predator Conservation Programme headquarters, where the operator notes more than 150 individual lions are monitored, followed by a session with Maasai elders on traditional governance.

6. Day 6

   Masai Mara to Nairobi

   A final morning game drive, then the 265km drive back with a stop at the Oloololo Escarpment. In Nairobi, Bomas of Kenya for the dance and music of more than forty communities, and the Karen Blixen Museum if time permits, before the airport.
